Recognizing Depression and Taking Small Steps

Dear Friends,

October is Depression Awareness Month, making it a good time to pause and consider what depression can look like and how we can respond when we notice the signs.

Depression does not always look like sadness. It can show up as feeling tired or emotionally numb, losing interest in things you normally enjoy, withdrawing from others, struggling with motivation, feeling disappointed in yourself, or having difficulty keeping up with your normal routines. Sometimes, these symptoms can slowly begin to affect everyday life before we even realize how much we’ve pulled back.

When depression begins to take hold, two simple but important tools can help interrupt the cycle:

1. Keep Moving.

Regular exercise and movement can help increase energy levels over time. When you’re feeling tired and unmotivated, exercise may be one of the last things you want to do, but even a short walk, getting outside, or adding movement into your daily routine can be a meaningful step.

2. Maintain Your Routine.

Depression can make us want to stop doing the things we normally do. The more we withdraw from our routines, responsibilities, and relationships, the easier it can become to feel stuck. Maintaining a normal rhythm of activities, even when motivation is low, can help keep depression from pulling you further into isolation and inactivity.

If you’re noticing ongoing changes in your mood, energy, motivation, or interest in life, reaching out for support can be an important step. You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to ask for help.

Sincerely,

The Willow Springs Counseling Team
