Dear Friends,
Here we are three months into the new year. How are you hanging in with your New Years resolutions? Are you making progress towards your goals? Let’s take a minute and uncover two negative thinking patterns that commonly hinder growth.
- I can control what is outside my control.
Many circumstances in life fall outside of our control. This includes the behavior of others people. We alone have the power to change our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and often underestimate the impact of even small changes in our lives. Recognizing what is outside of our control often gives us more energy for what is within it. - If I am doing the right thing, I should feel better.
Healthy changes do not always mean peaceful feelings. Our feelings tend to move us to be comfortable and getting out of pain as soon as possible. Change often pushes us out of our comfort zones, and requires both courage and a willingness to take risks. It’s only by stepping into the unknown that we grow and discover new possibilities. So, don’t be surprised if your distressing feelings (like anxiety, doubt, or fear) increase. Remember that this is a reaction to change and as you create a healthy rhythm your distressing emotions will decrease over time.
If you are in a season of change, we would love to come alongside you and support you as you navigate the growing process!
Sincerely,
The Willow Springs Counseling Team
