John is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC-MHSP) and National Certified Counselor (NCC) trained in addressing a wide range of problems and concerns. With experience in acute inpatient, addiction recovery, and community mental health settings, John has a knack for connecting with people with his easy-going demeanor, sincere words, and natural curiosity. In therapy sessions, John seeks to come alongside (not “give advice”), explore together (not “fix”), and understand fully (not “judge”). John most enjoys developing long-term solutions to problems (not “band-aids”). John’s heart has been influenced deeply by Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:29 – 30 in which Christ invites us to let out a long exhaleeee and rest in him amidst our exhausting lives.
From an academic perspective, John employs an integrated approach. A person-centered, trauma-informed framework combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) techniques allow him to effectively treat a wide range of issues. John practices from a Christian worldview and is willing to emphasize or minimize spiritual themes based on client preference.
Before his counseling career, John worked in the information technology and retail industries following his graduation from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 2014 (BS in Business Management). His desire to help people in a more direct manner led him to Carson-Newman University where he graduated in 2021 (MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling). John’s vocation aligns with his natural strengths and interests, allowing him to immensely enjoy his work.
Outside the therapy office, you will most likely find John enjoying the outdoors with his wife, watching UT sports, or hunching over a chess board.
